Motorized Apparatus that have served the
Youngstown Fire Department

Left: A shot of the men of Station 2 with their engine circa 1933. The engine is a 1933 Seagrave. On the right is Robinson chemical and hose engine in service at Number 7 around 1913.

On the right is an earlier picture of Station 11, before the Ahrens-Fox, when they had a what I believe to be a 1917 American LaFrance 750gpm Triple Combination pumper.

 This is a manufacturer's shot of YFD Engine 7, a 1935 American-LaFrance.

This is what I believe to be Engine 14, a 1951 Mack L. It had a 750gpm pump. This shot was taken behind Station 1, just outside the shop area.

These two shots are of 1953 American LaFrance pumpers when it was still in the active fleet as Pumper 5, left, and either Pumper 5 or 9, right. What is different about these units is that the main pump panel is on the passenger side. On most pumpers, it is on the drivers side. Pumper 9 is still in service as the YFD parade rig.

These two pictures display the battalion chiefs vehicles before they received the 1992 Chevy Suburbans. Each is a 1985 Chevy and had the designation Fire 31 (l.) and Fire 32 (r.).

The Roster
Shown here is a list of the retired and spare apparatus used by the Youngstown Fire Department. Their first motorized engine was a 1909 Webb pumper/steamer nicknamed "Thomas" at Station 8, followed the next year by "Dolly" at Station 9. According to Steve Hagy, an expert on fire apparatus, the reason for the nickname "Thomas" was that most Webb Apparatus were built on Thomas automobile chassis. The Department maintains a 1953 American LaFrance, which was rebuilt in 1983 as Parade 1. It is housed at Station 1.
