Flames destroy part of local steel company Youngstown, Ohio, June 19 - Some employees of a Youngstown business are now out of work after a large blaze burned down part of the facility. Firefighters in Youngstown spent Tuesday morning at the scene of a major fire that destroyed part of a business. Nearly 40 workers of Midwest Steel are now out of a job after flames ripped through a portion of the company's facility on Division Street. The blaze reportedly started around 2:00 a.m. No one was injured in the fire. Emergency crews found the structure engulfed in flames when they arrived at the scene. Fire Chief John O'Neil says all they could do was keep the blaze from spreading. "We don't have a lot of water down in this area," says O'Neil. "So, we're going to just protect some of the buildings that they have outside of the scrap yard here and make sure it doesn't extend into those. Besides that, let this building come down." A damage estimate is set at $2 million. Photo Caption: A firefighter struggles to put out flames at Midwest Steel. All from the WFMJ website, 6.20.2001. © 2001, WFMJ TV 21. |
