Fire calls for 2000 are in!

In the June 2001 issue of Firehouse magazine, the leading magazine of the fire service, an article was presented quoting fire calls for 285 participating fire departments in the country for the year 2000. The magazine sent out surveys to departments throughout the United States and Canada. Leading in US call volume was New York City, represented by FDNY. The department's 210 engines, 143 ladders, 5 rescues and various misc. apparatus ran over 1.5 million calls for 2000. Youngstown ranked 255th out of those surveyed, running 3,012 calls. Of those, 2,107 were fire calls, 108 were EMS calls where no local ambulance was available, and 797 were false alarms. According to the survey, which gave call information, number of apparatus, total staffing, and number of chiefs, Youngstown has an annual budget of 10.4 million dollars. By Joe Lowry, some information taken from Firehouse magazine, July 2001, pages 32-45, story posted 6.12.2001.
