Special Report:

Idora Park Ballroom Burns to the Ground

March 11, 2001

By Joe Lowry, webmaster

YOUNGSTOWN-- On Monday, March 5, at 9:51am, an alarm was struck downtown for a fire at the Idora Park Ballroom on the cities South Side. Unoccupied since the time of the park's closing in 1984, the ballroom stood as a reminder to what the park once was and it was the only remaining structure that once was Idora Park. Over the years, many organizations tried to save the ballroom, including the Mahoning Valley Historical Society, but to no avail.

By 10am, the fire spread to 2 alarms and there was nothing that could be done to save the historic structure. At approx. 5pm, most trucks were beginning to leave. Some crews of the YFD's A-Turn remained on the scene for almost 12 hours in order to finally douse all signs of fire.
